I had an amazing assignment recently for Edible San Francisco Magazine that sent me to a pepper farm in East Palo Alto and a Palace in San Francisco.

You would have never guessed there was a farm behind this modest, suburban East Palo Alto neighborhood, a block behind Ikea! David Winsberg at Happy Quail Farms has a huge greenhouse growing many varieties of peppers behind his home (many of which are sold to restaurants nation-wide), and a couple other plots in his neighbors’ backyards nearby. The housing lots in that neighborhood were originally subdivided into one-acre parcels, leaving several long-time tenants with a lot of extra land. David and his family have been there long enough that they have made friends with neighbors who allow them to grow peppers on the parts of the unused property.

David took me through a neighbor’s gate, behind her house and into yet another hidden farm plot where he grows peppers for chef Manny Torres-Gimenez's restaurant, The Palace, in San Francisco. Manny grew up in Venezuela cooking with Aji Dulce peppers which are surprisingly hard to find (or grow!) in California. David has mastered the technique and now produces them specially for Manny.

David picked these Aji Dulce peppers and I took them (that same afternoon) to Manny at The Palace where he cooked up this amazing dish called “What Came First? : Quail Three Ways”. I can’t wait to go back and dine at The Palace!

Apparently, 2013 has been named the “International Year of Quinoa”! For this reason, People Magazine reached out to me looking for a quinoa recipe, and they chose one of my favorites- my Fall Quinoa Salad with red bell peppers, butternut squash and dried figs. It’s featured in the November 11th issue of People which is on stands now (a collector’s issue with the Royals on the cover!). This recipe can be served warm or at room temperature and would be a great Thanksgiving side (especially for all your gluten free guests!).

And if you’re really into quinoa, here are a couple other ideas:

Hola from Spain! To celebrate finishing the cookbook (yay!), we headed to Andalusia. We rented a little apartment in Sevilla which is such an idyllic town (have you been?). Citrus trees literally line all the streets- it’s amazing! Around every corner you’ll find another tapas restaurant, with tables scattered over cobblestones, beneath citrus trees. Even the cathedrals have citrus orchards in their courtyards! I hear this region is known for it’s orange wine, but I have yet to try it.

Inspired by all the orange trees (both here in Spain, and in the Bay area right now) I wanted to share this Orange Galette recipe. I used a mixture of navel oranges, Cara Cara oranges (the slightly pinkish ones), and mandarins. I just love the warm cozy flavors of cinnamon and citrus in the Fall. I’ll take a slice with some of that delicious Spanish table wine, please!

It’s official! We have a cover! After shooting it several times, I came up with “the one”, and I’m so excited. Plus, the book is now officially for sale online! You can pre-order it on Amazon already! (It ships April 15, 2014).

I included a few process shots of the shoots as well- I took the overhead shot either standing on a chair or a ladder, all in the backyard with flowers from the farmers market, and several of my favorite dishes. The watercolor title is later scanned and Photoshopped onto the layout. Can’t wait to see it in print!

In the Fall (or anytime, really) I love the flavors of warm spices like cinnamon and cloves… Chai tea, Cider (or Chaider!) on a foggy morning- so cozy and comforting. Add some spiced ginger cookies, and I am set! Last night we had them on the deck with a cocktail at sunset. So very Fall!

I found this great recipe for chewy Ginger Cookies in the new Better Homes & Gardens Baking Cookbook. Click on over to my full post on their website for the recipe and more photos. It’s a good one!!
